    Good morning all

What is you few of taking fire extinguisher training inhouse.
Currently there are online training available in New Zealand and my opinion is that it needs to be competency based?

    Thank you
    Sandra

    Hi Sandra

I have found that a hybrid approach works best:
Workers undertake the on-line course for the theory and understanding, but still need to physically put it into practice (having attended multiple sessions, there is always someone who can't operate the extinguisher the first time!)
Using this approach also saves trainers time (and your money), as the on-line part can be done well before the practical session.

    Hi Sandra,
There are a few organisations who provide training with Virtual Reality equipment which is pretty awesome. Then you don't need to waste your extinguisher and you get a real feel of how it works.
    One provider is https://training4safety.co.nz/in-person-training

A side salad to this topic, I have observed some companies removing fire extinguishers from their premises because "you will have to train people how to use them". PLEASE don't follow the misguided mob with this sentiment. I had one client who removed fire extinguishers from their commercial kitchen and laundry because of this bad advice. Go figure! One clue - ask your insurer what they think before removing fire extinguishers.

Hi Sandra, I run it as internal training both theory and practical having the knowledge and skill to run the training.

Craig, thanks for that. Don't know how people can think that we.
Laboratory standards and Insurance will be worried with all our flammable liquid on site and in storage.

I have heard of studies that have shown that with extinguishers people tend to stay in the building trying to fight the fire rather than getting out.

Hi Aaron. That's the problem with studies, theories and reckons. They don't foot the insurance bill to rebuild your premises after you took the fire extinguishers out. We have a tendency to overthink things.

    Hi everyone
At Haydn & Rollett Construction we use Safety n Action 1/2 day course for theory and practical.
Great response from our site teams , even the veterans.
We also emphasise the training is get allow emergency egress not to be a firefighter.
