Has anyone had to deal with this new clause yet? It says that companies operating an ISO management system need to determine whether climate change will have an effect on their business, and whether any of their stakeholders have climate change requirements.
We have a client that has a fully certified ISO 9001, 45001, and 14001 management system and wants advice on how to implement the new amendment before the next audit. There doesn't seem to be much practical advice online on what parts of their manual and systems need to be updated or changed.
Thought I would ask here to see what others have done.
Hi Garth.
The advise we got was that we needed to look at the context of the organisation and decide whether climate change is an important aspect to our own business and /or our stakeholders. We did this at our annual management meeting.
This required a small amendment to a statement in our business context and identified stakeholders statements along the lines of "Senior management has identified the following internal and external issues that may affect the company’s ability to achieve the intended outcome of its Integrated Management System, ]including determining whether climate change is a relevant issue. These issues are taken into consideration when planning actions of its Quality, Health & Safety and Environmental Management System."
Obviously then if items are identified then the appropriate sections are amended.
I can send you a couple of attachments we received from our internal auditor that give some hints on what to look at if you want to advise your email address.
Kia ora Garth and Steve,
Same above, we are currently going through our audit so appreciate any insights or thoughts you have for this or examples. Same re context, I have previously been advised (by our auditor) that some organisations its relevant and or expected by their key stakeholders and/or clients etc. For some have even gone we dont believe in climate change (whether a normal global process of warming or affected by human activities etc) in these situations they have seen statements that they dont believe in climate change! From my perspective, our organisation backs that CC is a factor we need to consider so have both programs to help minimise our impact, have a few projects to reduce CO2 emissions and invest in green energy initiatives etc. We adapted the statement from the amendment and introduced into our HSE Manual, and referenced in our Environmental Sustainability Policy. We also added it to appropriate HSE documents but under Natural Environment / Extreme Weather Events i.e. Impacts from Climate Change for example risk registers for field activities etc.
As per the amendment 'we determined Climate Change is relevant' and that 'interested parties may have requirements etc' My email is safetydanatgmaildotcom if you have any examples you would like to share or vis versa etc Cheers Dan
I've asked the client to raise the question at a senior management meeting and make sure it's minuted. I've asked them to then do a customer survey, and check with their other stakeholders / interested parties.
But since they do work for the council, and councils are all affected by climate change, I don't think that there will be an option to deny any requirements.
So we will most likely be going through the clauses listed in the IAF guide and checking what is required. Including adding climate change to the scope of the business.
Covering safety issues will include recognising that climate related hazards (hot weather, cold weather, wind and storms etc) will have to adjust as the climate changes. And that the emergency and continuity plans will have to cope with more frequent storms, cyclones and weather events.
Hi Steve
Would you be able to share your attachments with me please? I have just discovered this amendment and have our ISO audit in two weeks. Thank goodness I'll have time to take action.
My email is: carolatsupertowingdotcodotnz
Thanks so much :)
