I would appreciate having an offline discussion with you about this topic as my brother worked in the industry and he ended his life - so I have a personal in-depth understanding of the triggers etc that led to ending his life this way.

Its a system I don't agree with but I am stuck with it unfortunately.
Yes it is a reporting requirement issued to us by our two Boards.
Your responses have given me food for thought but in saying that I am not in a position to influence our Board

Where i come from all levels of management and contractors are subjected to this process. However, statistically through incidents we have endured, and some have been high potential, not one has returned a non-negative drug or alcohol result. So why do we test for these when we know it is highly unlikely it will be a root cause? For me its about workers understanding what is required of them through their specific activities, their expected level of behavior and their overall attitude to safety.

The bottom line is - its a rip-off and a classic case of contracting out your duty of care plain and simple.
Me personally - as part of my role being a Health Safety & Risk Advisor, I conduct due diligence on behalf of my company even though we participate in prequalification process with a third party organisation, at a ridiculous cost - for what? not sure. I do not trust the concept of third party ensuring safety within our organisation. if your company has a robust safety management system then you would not need to rely on a third party organisation to do your job!

Our Health Monitoring Program covers before, during and after you leave our business.
Pre-medial covers off on potential health issues prior to being offered employment. Annual Health checks conducted to identify any changes in health while in our employment and Exit Medicals to ensure your health is healthy when you have left our business. For that i guess it touches on medical liability/ACC should an ex-employment suffer severe health issues later in life we as a business are able to confirm the health condition of ex-employees plus it gives the employee peace of mind also.
