  • Safety Conversations
Here are some of the guidance and questions I have used to get the leadership being visible on site for safety:
    - Go with courage and humility to walk the process with the operator(s)
    - How do you demonstrate adherence to a standard
    - How do we make deviations visible (work as done)
    - What ideas do you have for improving:
    o Your job
    o The workplace
    o The standards

Sometimes I would give them a topic to talk about with operators e.g. manual handing, What tasks do you do, how easy or difficult, How tired does it make you, what can be done to improve it.
  • Medical Exemption from safety footwear
We had similar issues in the past, but the medical form was too generic and the individual couldn't explain the problem properly. We organized a phone call appointment with the GP who explained the problem and some solutions to fix, similar modifications were required for their personal footwear. We then contacted an orthotic supplier for the relevant insoles.
  • Who leads mental health: H&S or HR?
It often depends on the size of the organisation to resource for the commitment. Also depends on whether H&S reports into HR or Operations team. There has to be a joint effort from the two groups to ensure include everyone in the organisation. People need to be fit for work, and the work needs to be fit for people regardless of whether it is a physical or mental aspect.

There are some easy to follow training sessions on this website that help to explain the legislation.
We had all our Line Managers complete the basic awareness course.
  • Coronavirus
Does anyone know if COVID-19 has been classified as a reportable illness if an employee contracts the illness whilst travelling for work? WorkSafe website references managing the risk and methods of prevention, but does not specifically state that it is reportable.
  • Comfortable Gumboots/inserts/options for Larger Sore Feet
We have in the past always used Blundstone for larger sizes and wide fitting option. Haven't had any need to use them recently.
