  • Safety Glasses for Sikh drivers
You may find a goggle style is more comfortable as they have a stretch band around the side & ears as opposed to arms
  • FENZ (Covid-19 Fire Safety Evac Schemes) Amendment Regs 2020
    ↪Christina Carroll
This is what happened for us as well. We have since resumed trial evacuations
  • Incident Management, Risk Management and Engineering Priorities
I would combine into one spreadsheet with some extra columns and use filters for reporting. Three spreadsheets sounds like hard work.
  • H&S when working from home
Hi, WorkSafe have just released a document on this, I have also put something together for our staff that I will email you.
  • Engineering control to eliminate mobile phone use in vehicles?
Using your phones function "do not disturb while driving" means that your phone isn't beeping or flashing notifications while you are in the car. Only incoming calls are allowed which come through via Bluetooth. Talking like this is no more distracting than having conversations with someone actually in the car. To me turning this on is a no brainer, and if I am a passenger its easily disabled till I am next in the car.
  • Oxygen Bottle Regulator Explosions/Fires - How much do you really know?
    ↪Antony Kitchener

I also work for a hospital and would be really interested to see your guidance material if you are able to share?
Thanks for raising this issue Lee. Great links as well. Hopefully the apprentice is on the road to recovery
  • Carbon monoxide exposure - worker health monitoring
I agree with Kerry getting in a occ health nurse would be the way to go. Assume there is a good reason why you can't change to electric forklifts?
  • SDS - is this crap advice on the specific types of PPE needed even legal?
What frustrates me is the amount of SDS that don't comply. Surely it would be sensible as part of the import approval process to ensure that the SDS is NZ compliant.... Instead the onus often ends up on the end user to hold the supplier to account and update before purchasing
  • Do H&S-related roles in NZ pay enough to attract the best people into the business?
I would like to see some changes to the salary survey in future
    1. Either get part-timers to enter their FTE salary or have a hourly wage option, then their figures can be included in the tables. This may influence the figures as most likely those in part time positions are female
    2. Add to table 3 median by job title. There is a huge difference in salary between a H&S administrator and a manager.
  • Government Website - Hazardous Substances Calculator
I use it alongside my in-house spreadsheet (which has more specific details on locations etc). It has some limitations but its an easy way to check regulatory requirements.
  • Safeguard income survey 2019
    ↪Peter Bateman
Is it possible to see the results for past surveys if you don't subscribe to Safeguard?
  • Health and Safety Representatives - Career Pathway
I would advise them to look into H&S courses - there are many on offer at various prices (from the NEBOSH intense course to SIT distance learning there are loads of options - one size does not fit all). In addition to that they need experience - its hard to jump into an advisor role without it. As a step they could look at H&S administrator or H&S Coordinator roles. Depending where they are based joining a professional organization may be of help.

  • Tips on using the Forum
    @admin
I tried to edit a post but hovering over the 3 dots only gives me the option to share
  • Safeplus Health and Safety Performance Tool
We used the online tool and found it useful as a general barometer of where we were at. It helped us decide what areas to focus on, and it was interesting to see the differences in perception between management & workers. We will probably do the online assessment again to show if we have closed up the gaps
  • Comfortable Combos - Eye protection that works with Ear Muffs
Hi, not sure if you got any direct messages or not endorsing any particular product but in regard to those who have to wear eye & ear protection you have two main options
    1. switch to earplugs & use standard safety glasses
    2. earmuffs with goggles (soft band is more comfortable & less likely to break the seal) or some safety glasses have soft arms
  • First Aid Kit Expiry Dates
Hi would take back to the supplier and get an exchange. Personally having expiry dates on the like of bandages seems ridiculous (happy to be enlightened as to why they are needed). Plasters though do loose their stickability after time so I normally get rid of those. On the up side expired items can be great for training sessions.
  • A Little Help Please?
