• Issuing a PIN - How'd That Work Out For Ya?
They don't know because no-one explained it to them. I see no conflict between between the H&S PIN and the PIN we use daily - it's all about education.

Cheers Tanya, I'll check that out.

    Hi Ben,

This is excellent feedback thanks very much. Very similar to my experience (hence the reason for the post), disappointingly for me the PIN was cancelled due to a legal technicality but there were enough concerns raised for WorkSafe to carry on with their own investigation which produced some interesting results. I work for a big Govt Dept. and I believe this was the first time a PIN had been issued to this particular branch so it caught a number of people on the hop. Also a good learning experience for me, for others though not so pleasant. The branch I issued the PIN to immediately referred it to WorkSafe which did not go down well with our legal branch, nor the senior safety branch who both wanted to know "Why didn't you just get the guy in for a meeting?". Big Dept, too many silos.
    Thanks for replying:up:

Thanks for the feedback Karen. Interesting what you said about the needs of the Board to be educated also, I fully agree. H&S doesn't begin & end on the factory floor eh?
  • Employing the hearing-impaired
Good on you for doing this! I worked at a business in the Manawatu who had two deaf people working there, and when I asked them if they could understand what was being said at staff/toolbox meetings they didn't have a clue. They could lip read to a certain extent but were in no way good enough to do a whole meeting. One of them had worked there for 10 yrs plus, I was absolutely staggered that no effort had been made at any type of inclusion.
There may be an NGO in your town that provides interpreters for free, which is what we made use of, and also what Andrew says above i.e. we got buddies for them so they knew the alarms were going off (plus big flashing lights), and pictorial SOPs etc. etc.
    Good luck!

Mate, come on you know damn well that's too darn easy...
  • ISO 45001 Standard Document
Nope. $300 might not be expensive to you, but in this day and age to other people trying to get ahead in their business $300 can be a significant sum.
Also, as has been my unfortunate experience, some businesses won't pay up even if they need 'em, because crap managers who think they know better than their H&S people would sooner spend that on production.
If we are expected to abide by these standards as we are expected to abide by the Act, which is free to anyone, then the standards should be free too. Just saying.
  • Safety Conversations
Jeez mate I like that "evaporative behaviour" expression, I think we know a certain organisation that excelled at that
  • Who leads mental health: H&S or HR?
The two places I worked at prior to my current position weren't interested in applying anything to do with mental health/wellbeing practices, but if anything along those lines did raise its head, it was either thrown at the H&S person (me) or fobbed off to the EAP.
Unless it was something like bullying or harassment, then (in the first prior job) this was taken over by HR (H&S person told politely - but firmly - "This has nothing to do with you"), which 9 time out of 10 resulted in the complainant usually leaving after being paid out and the accused usually got nothing more than a warning.
  • Tell us something about yourself that might surprise readers
Myself and the erstwhile Mr. Don Ramsay were both members of K3 or Kiwi Company 3, the last NZ Army combined force to support the UN Protection Force (UNPROFOR) in Bosnia-Herzegovina. I was a Sergeant at the time, the 2IC of the RNZ Engineer detachment and Don was an armourer (also a Sgt? Damn memory!) with the RNZ Electrical & Mechanical Engineer Workshops. Some very fun times, unfortunately most of them were bloody cold!

  • Bird Pest Control recommendations please

    Hi Jo,
As per Mathew's comments, the NZDF on a couple of occasions have used falconers to assist in getting rid of birds around certain buildings, which has proven to be quite successful. Can be pricey though...

  • Telarc Audits - Re-write your SMS to follow ISO 450001 format
Surprising to hear that and a little disappointed, particularly as I've had dealings with Telarc on a number of occasions & their auditors were pretty damn good.

As long as your system covers off what's required in 450001 then tell them to shove it.
  • How does pay in H&S compare?
Base income of $104,000 for an H&S professional? Not in Palmy, I guarantee that!
