We have a steady supply of pallets to our national parts warehouse in Wellington and no amount of posting on recycling boards helps us recycle them them. Any ideas?
We can't get rid of the damn things. Getting to point I am looking at introducing a skill saw and cutting them down to make it much easier to take away as firewood.
Hi Michael and Andrew. We are now in Feilding however were in Lower Hutt previously and we would always ask our freight company if they had spare pallets for use. Now in Feilding we are paying a lot of money to purchase pallets and we ask our freighters if they can find any businesses that have spare. Have you checked with your freight company whether they have the same?
If your business orders loose/carton cargo from overseas, please don't expect it to arrive at your door on pallets FOC. These pallets have to come from somewhere.
PLEASE try to get any decent pallets back into the supply chain. Ideally local carriers would assist with recycling back up the supply chain before they get re-purposed into planter boxes.
If the pallets are good quality, then get in touch with 3PL companies who could use them for their warehousing operations. Try those companies that have both warehousing and freight operations as it might be easier for them to pick up and deliver to their warehouse operations. It's good to get them back into the supply chain if they can be reused, rather than burning.
As an aside, you definitely don't want them stored anywhere near buildings. Stacked pallets are the perfect arrangement for fire to spread quickly. My wife designs sprinkler systems, and stored pallets are one of the biggest problems they face.
