About (eg: job title and organisation) |
Working in Forestry and heavy transport I come from a very practical background having been a logger from high school until I went back to school at 31 with a wife, kids and mortgage, to complete a Certificate in Forestry (Diploma) at Waiariki Polytechnic. I was picked up as a logging researcher while studying and learnt all about applied research as well as carrying out my own research into human factors. The seed was sown. Later work in 3 large forestry corporates as an H&S Manager and Operational Supervisor as well as further education have helped mold my skill and knowledge around H&S. However I have had injuries, I have lost close friends to accidents and had to deal on the ground with serious accidents and fatalities. These have molded my attitude to H&S as I do take H&S personally. My H&S dislikes: LTITIS - the fear of the Lost Time Injury Tick the box H&S management. Those without knowledge that try to determine how to meet a standard or outcome rather than ask how you go about meeting that standard or outcome. Lack of agreement and consistency across different groups within an industry. Those leaders that do not understand how vital their role is in H&S management. Endless and pointless SBO's, JSA's, SOP's, Risk Analysis and other acronyms. Those that jump to the remedial action without truly understanding what the problem was in the first place. My H&S likes Leaders that ask the pertinent questions and take H&S personally. Vigorous and intelligent debate Being prepared to challenge when things are wrong and look outside the square People with integrity |
