  • Drug testing: time to abandon it being limited to safety-sensitive areas only?
    A great conversation!

For me, 'safety sensitive' does not cut the mustard. The foundation for what we do is identifying foreseeable risks, assessing them and implementing effective controls. Impairment, whether through taking drugs or other means may be a contributory/ escalation factor to increased risk.

Therefore, the need for intervention measures (whatever they may be) should be an output from robust risk assessment. This may cut through some of the subjectivity and strong feelings on this topic.
  • Frivolous Friday
Nice article Simon, the majority of which I agree with, however I will challenge you on 'passion for safety', firstly in that there are a number of different definitions of the word passion or passionate.

I have got no issue with proclaiming that I have a passion for occupational health and safety. It is what gets me up in the morning, its what I love to do - working with people and understanding organisations to make work better, and giving it 100%.

There is no smell of a rat, there is drive, ambition and enthusiasm - I am confident this removes the need to study finger nails :)

  • Random Drug Testing
    Hi Chris,
Not sure on the 'safety sensitive' categorisation, I have always struggled with it. We often forget that drug and alcohol management initiatives are control measures to manage risks, and therefore, the need can only be understood through risk assessment, rather than hard-to-define categorisation.
  • Forklift Safety Lights
In addition to the above, it is important to remember colour vision deficiency when selecting lights/light colours to minimise risks.

  • Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) and SMS - no health included.
    Hi Paul

Thanks for raising this. I have not had time to review the content yet.

I think it would be pretty short sighed of CAA not to include health risks in their 'operational risks', especially given the national focus and obvious risks in this industry.

No opportunity to lobby change it take it??

    Cheers
