  • What Will White Island Mean For Your Business
Well put Chris and I fully agree with your comments. WorkSafe and our PCBUs will learn plenty from the outcomes of the court cases. I just hope it doesn't drag on for months or years. We need clarity going forward. Good opportunity for Jacinda and her lot to display transparency.
  • The Hazard Register - what is it really for?
We have a standard document for our sites which lists all the common risks. Risks that are unique to a site are then added to the register. We identify the risk via a matrix from 1-20. Then list the controls which gives us a residual risk. All risks with an initial rating of 20 and irrespective of their residual risk generally have a SWP document.

    Thanks Mike
  • Bright ideas to engage our... older gentlemen workers in H&S
Just stay focused on the key message. Fortunately I have full support from senior management (semi elderly males) because there neck is in the noose if the proverbial hits the fan.
  • Tag Testing
Thanks Michelle. I'm pleased to say that the company I work for does take H&S seriously. I discussed the issue in depth with the senior management team and they have asked me to complete a risk analysis and make a recommendation. We are committed to using 3rd party Test and Tag providers.
  • Laying charges against officers: a useful strategy?
Leaders don't have to know everything about everything, but good leaders know they have a responsibility to find out.
  • Laying charges against officers: a useful strategy?
One of the senior managers fall back response was "I only know what I know" Very frustrating and I should have barked back louder and told him to get off his backside and "go find out what he didn't know"
  • What do you measure and how do you measure it
Water usage is a good one to measure. It enables genuine cost reduction.

  • Change in how new members join the Forum
Nice action in getting rid of them. Quite frustrating though.
  • H&S Committtee Objectives
OBJECTIVE: Improve employee participation in H&S management PLAN Implement site based H&S Committees.
OBJECTIVE: High level of expertise for staff who deal with spill controls PLAN: Provide training where necessary and ensure all spill kits are checked and re-stocked when necessary.
OBJECTIVE: Clean and tidy workshops PLAN: Ensure techs and foremen instill pride by promoting safe work practices

It's hard work getting traction at times, but we are getting there.
  • Using "days since last accident" signs
I agree with your sentiments. It creates a reluctance to report incidents.
  • Enculturing Safety
    I like your thinking Andrew
  • Notifiable Incidents
We have had 3 incidents in the past two years that I deemed to be "notifiable". I completed the documents via the WorkSafe tool for all 3 cases. WorkSafe phoned me very quickly regarding 2 incidents and we discussed them in full. Following the discussion they advised me that neither were "notifiable" and thanked me for the comprehensive reports. At least we have both incidents documented should there be any comeback at a later date. The WorkSafe tool is very easy to use.
