  • What work-related health category does cancer fit in?
I would go with Physical, Riki, but take a look at this resource and see what you think
  • What work-related health category does cancer fit in?
Hi Riki, no such thing as a dumb question, Skin Cancer develops from exposure to UV radiation, if an employees job means they are exposed to it, their employer needs to consider that risk and manage it. Have a look at this page on WorkSafe's website which explains in more detail, and come back with more questions. Protecting Workers From Solar Radiation
  • Did anyone see the mobile scaffolds on 'The Block' last night and the new double down KFC ad?
    ↪Sarah Bond
Her In Doors is a block fan in our house, the odd times I've watched, I've cringed at the contestants trying to paint at night. I'd guess that the professional tradies would factor in normal site H&S practice, as would the site foreman, but if this was "out of hours", would it be a bit of DIY casualness?
  • Time to abandon the risk matrix?
So a risk actually lives in an area within the matrix, not a single point. — Aaron Marshall

Totally agree Aaron, Sandra's comments reinforce this.

I can provide the same scenario to two different teams and the outcome of the risk matrix will be different. — Sandra Nieuwoudt

But they look pretty and gives the appearance that we've considered the possibilities, and done something to reduce/control them

  • Occupational Health Monitoring - Employees Who Want to Opt Out
    ↪Andy Bunyan
    Hi Andy,yes that's certainly true, but doesn't S34 1.(a) broaden it too ?

34 Duty to ensure appropriate health monitoring is provided

    (1) A PCBU must ensure that health monitoring of a worker is of—
    (a) a type recommended by an occupational health practitioner with experience in health
    monitoring; or
    (b) a type referred to in a safe work instrument (if any).
  • Annual test of safety showers and eye-wash
Blackwoods have a Safety Shower Test Kit for sale on their website Chris, if your Safety Showers have back flow preventers, that's IQP territory. The suppliers of these items have a fair amount of advice on what checks are required. Are your people giving them a 10 second weekly operational check?

For Eye Wash Stations, Reinol sell a test gauge. You'll find shower socks there too.
  • Hearing screening training in New Zealand
    ↪Sherralynne Smith
The prerequisites are detailed on the linked pages for an MA,

If you fancy a trip to Brisbane, The Hearing Company runs four day Occupational Audiometry Courses, no prerequisite training, but you would need to see what standing the qualification gained would have in NZ, maybe Alex's mum could advise you

  • Hearing screening training in New Zealand
    Hello Sherralynne

A search using the term "audiometric technicians training NZ" tells me, there isn't any training offered in NZ, nearest choices are Aussie, you'll find some info here

If you want to become a full blown Audiogist, both Auckland and Canterbury Unis offer a Master of Audiology degree.

  • Lithium Ion Site Storage Requirements - Large EV Packs
Feedback from one is the cost for "proper" storage is prohibitive and therefore they will only bring in stock as required. — Greg Sutton

I imagine you have to balance the cost of storing them appropriately, vs the cost of dealing with the consequences of things going pear shaped because of not storing them correctly

    .
That is based on PHEV units which are smaller than the upcoming full EV packs.
I am not sure if there is a plan to recycle locally or dump "offshore"
    — Greg Sutton
There has been some talk of using cells as the basis of a storage system for harvesting solar power and storing it for use later in the day, or cloudy day use, for as long as the cells will hold a charge (albeit a reduced one), after that it gets messy.
  • Supermarket safety
Steve you are confusing a fire with an unplanned attack. I think you will find the supermarkets have plenty of exits for people to use in case of a fire. — Dianne Campton

No, what I am saying is that there are two possibilities that supermarket management should be factoring into their risk assessment and planning, and in the event that either take place, checkouts jammed with trolleys may block emergency egress.
